The duality of Auchan's presence in France with sister companies Chronodrive and Auchan Drive is becoming increasingly difficult to justify. We believe that better synergies can be built around a single brand for all of Auchan's Drive click & collect pick up stations across France.

French retailer Auchan is in the process of merging its two Drive click & collect banners, Chronodrive and Auchan Drive, Linéaires reports. Auchan's Managing Director of Drive in France has confirmed the move, even if plans are not yet fully finalised.
Auchan’s current promotion is a clear message that hypermarkets are not yet doomed, as the retailer capitalises on its big-box competence to differentiate in a market of expanding discounters and Polish-origin proximity supermarkets.

Auchan has started a bi-weekly promotion of regional products in Poland under the tagline 'Feast of Local Flavours' (‘Uczta Lokalnych Smaków’) .Combined with its 'Iconic Brands' ('Kultowe Marki') booklet the retailer is offering more than 500 Polish products from 13 counties.
To understand the likely development scenario for Poland, one need only look at its older brother in France. There, Auchan Direct is also experimenting with click and collect at Auchan's minimarkets, as well as 24/7 collection lockers.
Auchan's grocery home delivery subsidiary Auchan Direct is introducing a click & collect option, Handel Extra reports. The pilot is reportedly taking place in its recently inaugurated minimarket located in Warsaw.
To us, this development is interesting as it is an extreme example of the current hypermarket trend in France, and an exception to the wider strategy of Louis Delhaize. This store is the first opening of a Cora hypermarket in France in 21 years, which comes in parallel with a clear slowdown of French new openings in the channel over the past three years, LZ Retailytics data shows.

Leclerc’s decision to essentially copy Conad’s ‘Creazioni D’Italia’ line should indicate that the French retailer was satisfied with the label’s performance and wanted to replicate it. This should be a recognition that Conad has created a line which is fully capable of making it abroad.

Everyone seems to have an opinion on umbrella brands vs. phantom brands, or cannot seem to make up their mind. As we wrote about Auchan Russia phasing out its phantom brands yesterday, now Carrefour is moving away from its unified brand strategy in Poland.

In the Auchan universe, Russia has enjoyed special rights, but these days appear to now be coming to an end. We believe that the new umbrella label with its unified design will make Auchan’s private label offering stand out more in the mid-tier segment.

Auchan plans to merge its product category private labels under its Auchan umbrella brand in Russia. The transformation will be completed within the next two years, starting with non-alcoholic drinks this year.
French retailer Auchan has committed to invest HUF17bn (EUR53.68mn) in Hungary in 2018, mostly to finance its expansion plan. The retailer previously announced the introduction of new formats, with the aim of operating 60 supermarkets nationwide by 2022.
