Furshet's unique selling proposition has been curbed by the hryvnia currency devaluation and changing competitor offer. Now the Kiev-based supermarket operator is the last in line to react to the lingering economic downturn, with limited strategic options.
Sisa has been on the search for a new buying group since leaving Auchan’s central in the country by the beginning of the year. Sigma should be a nice fit for the retailer as far as assortment is concerned since both organisations serve independent merchants and focus on smaller formats.

A quality-orientated supermarket needs an entry price level – even if it is just to make it shine in price comparisons. These ranges shouldn't be too attractive, they just have to be there. This is what Système U seems to have learned.

Although all lights show green for a market entry, Aldi will face stiff headwinds in a rapidly maturing market. With Lidl in a strong market position and increased regulatory constraints, the standard hard discount concept will have to be adapted to local market conditions if Aldi is to succeed.

We feel Carrefour now has more room for experimentation and the retailer is getting ready to be part of the organic segment in Spain. However, Carrefour is not alone and will face competition from both specialist chains and the roll-out of other traditional retailer's similar ventures.

This announcement from Houra may seem fairly trivial, but taking a closer look, it becomes obvious that Houra is a special case in the e-commerce market in France. We believe Auchan’s multiformat focus could represent a financial opportunity for local partner Furshet, who finds itself in dire need of cash. The economic instability of the past few years has seriously hit the mid-tier supermarket segment in which Furshet is anchored. For Auchan, the interest is to drive its own expansion in the country.

Auchan is considering introducing minimarkets in Ukraine, as it has in other European countries. The plan is to open a handful of stores in the capital city Kiev, bearing the Auchan brand. The retailer is however reportedly facing difficulties due to its contractual obligations with its local partner, Furshet.
We see this decision as the extension of both retailer's agreement for the joint purchase of branded goods initiated nearly two years ago. Private labels was an expected second step given the fierce competitiveness across Spain. Market leader Mercadona's success relies on quality private labels at the lowest price, and rivals have had to adapt accordingly.

Why is Albert Heijn in the Netherlands so late to the game? The primary reason is probably the limited presence of key innovator Amazon in the Dutch market. The e-commerce giant still only operates an ebook online shop there. Meanwhile, market leader Ahold Delhaize – operating an incredibly dense network of supermarkets – has emerged as the retailer filling this gap in the Netherlands – providing services similar to those of Amazon in other markets.
The retailer is clear that it will not significantly change its promotional strategy, but the Carrefour management seems to be walking a tightrope between investors – who are concerned about the cost of any increased promotional activity – and Carrefour’s need to sustain its price image, particularly in France vis à vis French challenger E.Leclerc.

The Cosmia line has been operating for several years in Spain before timidly appearing on the shelves of neighbouring countries. So, in this sense, the range is nothing new. Auchan is merely making the global roll-out of the line official, which has been hinted at over the past few years.

Auchan has stated in a press release that it will launch a new health & beauty line, Cosmia, across all its operating countries. The range will comprise some 500 products such as cosmetics, face and body care, including shower gels and shampoos.
Fozzy Group is taking its Silpo supermarket concept down-market, guarding against profit erosion in times of economic downturn. The new Thrash chain will strengthen the bottom line, focusing on the sale of fast-moving assortment ranges in reduced sales areas.
