Aldi Süd in Germany is considering price promotions for brands. Lebensmittel Zeitung suggests “a paradigm shift” is looming as the discount retailer is “seriously contemplating” the introduction of special offers for leading manufacturer brands.

So, Aldi in Germany finally ventures into e-commerce? Oh no, not that fast. Mandatory instore payment and three days response time for a haulier to arrange delivery of a client’s order – that’s not exactly what we call online shopping. It’s unlikely that this service will be part of a future e-commerce strategy for Aldi.

Amazon is the seemingly overmighty nemesis of grocers in Germany and elsewhere, especially now that it has launched Amazon Fresh in the country. But there is also another, much closer retailer that could be motivating Rewe in this venture.

Rewe Group is extending its online supermarket in Germany with a non-food offer from partners. In what is said to be a test phase, the retailer will add five external non-food retailers to its offer from early July, creating a marketplace that can later be gradually extended.

Schwarz Group-owned discount chain Lidl will roll out a smartphone application in Austria that shows instore product availability, reports Lebensmittel Zeitung. Customers will be able to search for stores nearby to see where the desired product is in stock, avoiding being faced with empty shelves.

On 15 June, Lidl will open its first stores in the USA. The initial batch of outlets will be located on the East Coast, in the states of Virginia, North and South Carolina. At the same time, Lidl will open an online shop for groceries in China.

It comes with no surprise to us that dm is revamping its assortment, given that the retailer is doing so every three to four years. However, the timing is interesting as its main competitor, Rewe Group's Bipa, announced a similar overhaul only recently.

Over the past few years, pricing in the Austrian drugstore sector has come under massive pressure from various sides. Countering a huge sales decline with price cuts all over the range now seems the way to go for Bipa. This is not hara-kiri, but simply an adjustment to the current reality.

Rewe Group is asking suppliers for financial support for its ailing Bipa drugstore division in Austria. Following the acceleration of sales decline last year, the German retailer is on a complete realignment course for the banner.
Traditional co-operative Edeka will be focusing on areas beyond its traditional grocery stores this year as it backs e-commerce and drugstores. That, at least, is the impression that the statements of CEO Markus Mosa have given. So let’s look at the figures: a single-digit million sum is initially earmarked for the drugstore co-operation, while a double-digit million amount will flow into the e-commerce venture. Not that impressive, when compared with a total investment of nearly EUR2bn.

Amazon has confirmed that it will enter the market in Australia. At the same time it is set to launch Amazon Pantry in Switzerland. The market entry to Australia was confirmed in a short statement from Amazon, ending long running speculation that a move was imminent.

Finding a catchy name for the online shop is one way to make it stand out. More than this, the shop needs to become a shopping destination, a brand in its own right. Unfortunately, Penny’s current store concept positioning cannot help here as it focuses on neighbourhood, localness, sustainability and health.
Aldi has decided to venture into new territory - virtual territory. With an online shop, it will face the same challenges as all its peers that have long gone online. But it has to do something to defend its position in Belgium.

After giving up on XXL Mega Discount, Billa and Selgros in Romania, Rewe Group is in an ideal position to consolidate its efforts to drive the expansion of its remaining Penny discount concept in a market that is too big and too lucrative to be left to competitors such as Lidl.
