Spanish grocery retailers have had a hard time internationalising. The exception to the rule may be Dia, but only at first sight, as it spun off from French giant Carrefour. When they do, Portugal is often on the top of the list, given geographical and cultural proximity.

To understand the likely development scenario for Poland, one need only look at its older brother in France. There, Auchan Direct is also experimenting with click and collect at Auchan's minimarkets, as well as 24/7 collection lockers.
To us, this development is interesting as it is an extreme example of the current hypermarket trend in France, and an exception to the wider strategy of Louis Delhaize. This store is the first opening of a Cora hypermarket in France in 21 years, which comes in parallel with a clear slowdown of French new openings in the channel over the past three years, LZ Retailytics data shows.

Leclerc’s decision to essentially copy Conad’s ‘Creazioni D’Italia’ line should indicate that the French retailer was satisfied with the label’s performance and wanted to replicate it. This should be a recognition that Conad has created a line which is fully capable of making it abroad.

Instore tracking is not a new technology, but to date German retailers have been quite cautious about this topic. In other countries, retailers have already been experimenting with instore tracking for a few years. In addition to British Tesco and Waitrose, other European retailers such as French Carrefour and Swedish ICA Gruppen have also implemented trials or installations.

A few retailers have tried a unique take-away formula to gain a slice of the European trend toward convenience food, more or less successfully. We believe latest Carrefour concept wholeheartedly embraces the food service channel.

Carrefour France has confirmed plans for the roll-out of BonApp, a standalone snacking-focused minimarket banner. After nearly two years of piloting the concept, the banner is now taking off, with four openings since the beginning for the year.
Everyone seems to have an opinion on umbrella brands vs. phantom brands, or cannot seem to make up their mind. As we wrote about Auchan Russia phasing out its phantom brands yesterday, now Carrefour is moving away from its unified brand strategy in Poland.

Carrefour Poland is multiplying the array of grocery private labels lines not bearing its name, following successful tests introduced last year. Eight new category-specific lines have been announced, and will be introduced in H2 2017 and 2018.
Aldi, in its effort to become a one-stop shopping destination and attract more shoppers, will need to add branded coffees to its range. As this will likely result in a massive decline of its own-production coffees, NewCoffee will have to find new wholesale customers to compensate.

LZ Retailytics data shows that the economic outlook for Spanish retailers appears positive. All the top players have experienced positive or at least static sales density growth between 2015 and 2017, even if the reasons for this may vary greatly.

Supermarket operator Mercadona tops LZ Retailytics 2017 ranking for Spain in terms of retail sales per square metre. With sales expected to reach EUR9,800 per sq m in 2017, this consolidates Mercadona’s market leadership, given it is well ahead of most of its competitors.

As much as unified branding ensures product visibility and therefore sales, category own-brands give shoppers the illusion of choice while giving the retailer more flexibility to differentiate from competition beyond prices, particularly in terms of innovation and exclusives.
Combining online and convenience is something of the holy grail for all retailers. Whoever manages to do this effectively and profitably is guaranteed success; but challenges and pitfalls lie along the way.
