The launch of a vegetarian store concept is a novelty in the Swiss retail landscape. To date, no larger chain has chosen to specialise in vegetarian products; just a few individual independently-run veggie stores can be found in the country.

The Swiss retailer Coop will open a new store concept at the end of May. The store, which will reportedly be named after Coop’s vegetarian private label line Karma, will be located at the train station in Zug.

Coop Danmark is to introduce its combined mobile scanning and payment app, Bip & Betal to all its Fakta discount stores in 2018. Coop Executive Vice President Jan Madsen told the Danish newspaper Finans that its discount banner is the perfect choice for the retailer’s first full-scale roll-out of the service.
The fact that Edeka is becoming a member of the co-operation instead of acquiring or building its own production facility reduces risks and responsibility Edeka would have to take over while still providing it with a strong negotiation argument.

Schon bis Ende 2018 soll über allen 163 Sky-Märkten die Rewe-Fahne wehen. Damit werden laut eines Medienberichts Kosten gespart und Vorteile im Marketing erzielt. Schließungen sind keine geplant. Der Maßnahme wollen alle Genossen der Coop zustimmen.

Dansk Supermarked has hired a new Director for its international discount chain Netto – Michael Løve, who is currently CEO at UK DIY chain B&Q. Løve, who was previously Chief Operating Officer and Chain Director at Coop Danmark, is to start in his new role on 1 September this year.

It makes sense for Coop Danmark to enter the catering market since it displays such high growth rates. It’s certainly a good way for the retailer to diversify its portfolio. It is also in line with its own focus on convenience meals and could realize synergies in this area.

Coop Danmark has bought 50% of the shares in Catering Denmark, a company focusing on meal bags and catering to companies. According to the retailer, the move is motivated by the fact that the foodservice market has seen significantly higher growth than grocery stores in recent years.
The latest results for The Co-operative show a mixed state of affairs. Clearly the group is enjoying success in rebuilding its business as it revamps its stores and attracts new, loyal shoppers and members. The convenience channel is growing in the UK and 3.5% increase in like-for-like sales puts the group slightly ahead of average growth as it differentiates on fresh food, local provenance and sustainability initiatives.

The Co-operative Group in the UK has released annual results, showing positive like-for-like momentum for its food business but an overall group loss on further write-downs for its banking arm.
The Spesa Social model is interesting because to our knowledge crowdsourcing hasn’t been used for a click & collect model like this before. Retailers like Amazon and Instacart have used it for home deliveries, a proposition that we think makes more sense.
By offering click & collect, Dansk Supermarked will be able keep its Bilka hypermarkets in line with Danish shoppers’ increasing preference for convenience. Afraid to lose shoppers to grocery delivery services such as those of Coop Danmark, pureplayers like Nemlig and the many convenience stores in the country, this was a very logical move for Dansk Supermarked.

An initiative like this fits perfectly with Coop’s agenda to make 50% of its total assortment across all chains exclusive by 2018. Regardless of how many of its members choose to invest, it’s a clever PR move which is bound to boost its image as the champion of Danish quality food, among shoppers and producers alike.
