We understand the rise of crowd-based services from the grocery e-commerce vacuum which has long existed in Spain. We nonetheless remain sceptical regarding the growth potential of such a venture, particularly as the grocers are increasingly pushing their own online proposition.
Spanish grocery retailers have had a hard time internationalising. The exception to the rule may be Dia, but only at first sight, as it spun off from French giant Carrefour. When they do, Portugal is often on the top of the list, given geographical and cultural proximity.

The upcoming quarters are going to be interesting for Spanish retailers looking to develop their presence in neighbouring Portugal, from the pending Mercadona market entry, to Dia looking to establish an e-commerce presence, and Froiz opening new supermarkets.
Poaching a top manager from Lidl is an expression of Aldi Nord's fundamental strategy change and its new-found combative spirit. Buying knowledge and experience from competitors is no longer a taboo. Given Aldi's liquid funds, this is a major threat to all competitors.

Supermarket operator Mercadona tops LZ Retailytics 2017 ranking for Spain in terms of retail sales per square metre. With sales expected to reach EUR9,800 per sq m in 2017, this consolidates Mercadona’s market leadership, given it is well ahead of most of its competitors.
